About the Author
DENNIS FREEBORN was Head of Language Studies at the College of Ripon and York St. John, UK, until 1984, and was Chief Examiner in English Language Studies for the London University Schools Examinations Board. He is the author of A Course Book in English Grammar and Varieties of English, both also published by Palgrave Macmillan.

Evolution of English Language and History.

Interesting history and layout, not seen in previous volumes on same subject, with, -where available-, facsimile of original manuscripts, printed reproductions in Old English lettering, in modern lettering, (but with the thorn retained), and modern translation. Comments on contemporary historical events accompany throughout.

Good for those with experience, poor for those with none.

This book is extremely tedious. The variation of texts (although I believe accurate and interesting to look at) are extremely challenging to read. If your study in old English is far along and you feel confident in your ability to decipher a manuscript than this is probably a good fit; but if you're just starting out than its not the most ideal learning tool.
