Maureen Sprankle is a Professor Emeritus at the College of the Redwoods, in Eureka, CA. She received her M.B.A. (emphasis in Computer Information Systems) and B.A. in Music from Humboldt State University, and her B.A. in Mathematics from Pepperdine University. In addition to teaching, Maureen has worked as a consultant in microcomputers for business and education, as a freelance Programmer/Analyst (business and scientific applications), and as a Scientific Programmer/Analyst Research Programmer in the space industry. After retiring from teaching, she and her husband of 43 years, Dr. Norman Sprankle,� moved to the Oregon coast, where they both enjoy traveling, teaching, computers, the theater, and the out of doors. Her hobbies include music and reading.

expensive door stop

The concepts in this book are hard to follow the way the authors write them. My class has been told that many of the references and terms used in this book are inaccurate or out-dated.

The worst thing about this book, however, was the index! When you try to use the index to find a topic, you have to go to the page sited and then go forward X number of pages until you actually find the topic you were originally looking for!

Textbooks are expensive enough, but to have to purchase one that has an index that doesn't sync with the text?!

I could not bring myself to sell this textbook used to someone, it would just perpetuate the crime.

I have never seen such uninformative textbook. while it has many "tips" it is worthless to anyone just starting programming in any language.

A pain in the behind book if ever there was one...

This is a textbook for a course I teach and, honestly, I don't care if my students buy it or not.
It actually says things like: static, needing an object to reference it. This is, arguably, wrong. It doesn't and only confuses them on this and a number of other points.
Dislike it immensely.

A sci-fi film that can be enjoyed by non-sci-fi viewers

This sci-fi thriller can be enjoyed even by people who dislike sci-fi films and books. The sci-fi element, which has no relationship to reality other than as a parable, is essential to the plot but it is not overly complicated or too bizarre. In fact, the message of the film is thought-provoking and relevant. And the story is well-acted and entertaining.

Without revealing too much, Matt Damon's character meets and is attracted to the character played by Emily Blunt, who is also attracted to him. But there are forces, ruled by the "chairman," who does not want, for reasons that become clear in the film, the couple to form a relationship and marry. This "adjustment bureau" has the ability to manipulate circumstances to make sure that events happen as they want; in this case, to keep the couple apart.

Viewers can think of the "chairman" as God, and the "adjustment bureau" as divine angels who carry out the divine wishes. They can also see the film as addressing whether humans have free will and, if not, can they have at least some control over their lives; in this case, can Damon and Blunt defy the "chairman" and the "adjustment bureau" somehow and, if so, how and when?

The Romance Continues

Leslie North does it again with book 2 of the Tazeem Twins. This book picks up where book 1 left off and the story of Rene and Joshua continues. In this book reality comes in to play that Joshua has a job to do and Rene is feeling neglected and alone. What does one do all day in a palace? Then there is the Queen to contend with. Story flows well and you will enjoy the characters and their story. Looking forward to the continuation of the story and the introduction of a love interest for James, Joshua's twin.

Was a good continuation of the first book

Was a good continuation of the first book.. She (Rene) was trying to spend time with him (Joshua) and he was trying to keep his father happy.. He wasn't giving her enough attention so she did what any woman would do left..That got his attention and made him realize exactly what he had let go and was missing. He flew to her home and got her back.. Can't wait for the next installment to come .

good author and good book

I have been reading a lot of Leslie's books and I must say she just gets better with each book. This book is a good book it continues with Rene and Joshua story. Rene has moved into the palace. She is in a new country and feeling alone. The queen doesn't seem to like her and Joshua is always working. Joshua puts his career before Rene and seems to get mad at her for being a distraction. He gets a little annoying sometimes but the chemistry is really good between them. Can't wait for the next book. I get a ARC copy of the book for a honest review and I can honestly say that you should read this series. She keeps getting better with each book and they are worth the read.

adequate for introductory course

The author uses Java as a framework within which to teach graphics to an aspiring programmer. Java is useful because of its popularity and free availability on many platforms.

The exposition is straightforward. Simple operations that are expected in any graphics package. There are vector operations, involving positioning and drawing various geometric objects and text. All in 2 dimensions. The maths starts to get a little involved, when the text talks about translation, rotation and scaling. Hopefully, you have done an introductory course in matrix algebra.

There is also discourse on 3d graphics. Here, we move into the realm of virtual worlds. For some readers, this might be the main attraction. Where you get to model a 3d object and then render it.

The graphics facilities in Java are adequate. Not as fully fleshed out as OpenGL, perhaps. But for an introductory course in graphics, perfectly adequate. The reader should also be aware that there is little commercial game development in Java. Some people are attracted to computer graphics because they want to code games. Fine. And you can treat this book as a first text. Just know that most jobs in this field don't use Java.

Great for a first book on computer graphics using Java

This book does spend some time on Java 2D and 3D, but not so much as to be a book about those technologies. Instead there is just enough so that the author can focus on the real subject of the book - computer graphics techniques. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 cover fundamental aspects of the last part of the rendering pipeline focusing only on two-dimensional graphics.

Next the author focuses on modeling, representation, and rendering of three-dimensional virtual scenes and provides an introduction to Java 3D in parallel with this. Various techniques for the hidden line and hidden surface problems are described in chapter 7. Chapter 8 deals with generating photo-realistic effects like shading, shadows, and reflections. Chapter 9 covers selected topics such as special effects, interaction, and stereoscopic viewing which is necessary for understanding virtual reality applications.

There are plenty of illustrations in the book as well as exercises, and the author has a very conversational yet detailed writing style. I particularly like how the book builds from 2D to 3D methods. There are exercises at the end of each chapter making it a good selection for a textbook in a beginning class on the subject. It really isn't graduate material, but it would make a good undergraduate text. There are plenty of code snippets too. The author doesn't bog down the book in complete programs. That is really the domain of a book on Java itself, anyways. I recommend it.

Complete Crap

Ugghhh. Almost anything would be better than this. The author of this trash ought to be the poster child for every public school teacher who has taught humanity that math is complicated and only causes confusion. This book appears to be written by someone who not only doesn't understand math, but can't even comprehend basic English. The sentences are largely tangled, schizoid gibberish. Even the most simple concepts (e.g. AffineTransforms) are obfuscated in inexplicable (and completely irrelevant) mathematical equations that add zero value towards explaining the underlying concept and serve only to confuse and confound. Every sentence in the book is constructed as to not only run on into meaninglessness, but actually head off in five or six directions at once. I wouldn't have believed it was possible to write this poorly if I hadn't actually purchased the book. Here's only on example:

"In order to represent also translations in matrix form, another representation of the coordinates of points is introduced. The next section will discuss this alternative representation called homogeneous coordinates in more detail."

Believe it or not, that's actually the most coherent paragraph in the book. This is the worst book I've ever read. Total waste of time and money.

Find your Faction in a fun way.

The book sounds similar to a "Which ________ are you?" quiz on social media. But it's more fun and more complete. And it has 100 percent fewer grammar and spelling mistakes!

The Divergent series' fans will really enjoy this entertaining look at the motivations of Abnegation, Condor, Amity, Dauntless and Erudite. Just like sorting yourself into a Harry Potter house, this is a neat way for fans to dive into the stories. Fun, but Flawed

I really liked the concept behind this book, but I think it has one fatal flaw. I don't think their system for tallying up the quiz answers was really accurate. I got Dauntless, which didn't feel right to me at all, but that was how the math worked out on their system. They put a specific answer that is supposed to be the "Divergent" answer with each question, and that seemed odd to me.

It was fun to play with this, and I hope my students (for whom I really bought this) enjoy it, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for an accurate answer.

EDIT: After writing this, I had a student take it, and her answers all seemed to follow the same pattern, and thus her result made sense. I decided then to go back and more closely analyze my results. Basically, all the 2s represent Abnegation, 4s represent Amity, 6s Candor, 8s Dauntless, 10s Erudite, and 12s Divergent. I tallied the number of answers I got for each category. I had 12 Amity answers, 12 Erudite answers, and 10 Candor answers. Basically I'm Divergent. This method made MUCH more sense to me!

Not the best...

I've only gone through the first two chapters but what I've experienced so far isn't very enjoyable. This book is plagued by grammatical mistakes which make examples hard to follow and at times has extremely vague instructions. I've had to look at the completed code for every exercise because some items were omitted from the instructions. This book does contain a lot of useful information if you can manage to complete the exercises.

No Code Samples for Download like the author indicated, but later recovered

Fair content. But NO CODE SAMPLES AVAILABLE for download online like the author George Taskos indicated in the preface. When opening a ticket with Packt Publishing, they just left the ticket open with no resolution and no response to my follow-ups.

Save your money since the cookbook series are where you go for code.

Revision: A week later they provided the code download and offered a complimentary ebook. I appreciate and may consider using Packt books in the future.
