Perfect series for young children

I was looking to start lessons with my music loving, but rather hyperactive 4 1/2-year old. I found this series of books to be perfect. Right now, we're working on the Lesson Book, the Theory Book, and the Activity/Ear Training book. The combination is wonderful. The lesson book introduces the initial topic and that topic is supported by the other books with lots of drawing and coloring activities that my daughter adores (and which significantly help reiterate the concepts being taught). Early examples include circle the two black key groups, draw the down-stems on the left-hand notes, color the #2 finger pink/#3 finger green, listen to the clap patterns, etc. We will move to the other books in the series when we're ready. I really like how each of the "helper" books refer back to the specific page in the initial lesson book that is being supported. Likewise, the basic lesson book has footnotes to say when it's time to move to the next "helper" book. I bought a used copy of the teachers guide for myself. However, get the new books for your kid as I would guess that any used copy would already come "pre-colored". In all honesty, this series would probably be considered too "babyish" for kids much above the age of six. However, for your preschooler or early elementary-aged child, you won't find better than this.

ETA: My copy of the book also has a CD which this particular book does not appear to possess. However the edition with the CD is also available here on Amazon.

This whole series is fantastic! I've been playing flute and guitar since I was eight, and have recently wanted to get my whole family excited about the piano. I did a lot of research to find books that would cover all aspects of learning (Theory, Technic, recital pieces, etc.) and Alfred's piano library has it all. It introduces all the necessary elements of music, while making it fun and easy to learn. For children, I would recommend getting at least the Lesson, Recital, Theory, and Technic books for each level. For adults or those with some prior music knowledge, I'd recommend Alfred's All-In-One Piano Course. Great series!

Alfred Method is great for beginner students . . . and teachers!

I would call myself a beginner piano teacher, as I play the piano myself but have had no instruction as to how to teach others to play. I now have four beginner students, whom I have been teaching for a little over a year.

I love the Alfred method. The four books: technic, lesson, solo/recital, and theory all seem to really work well together. The songs coordinate with each other, so for each new concept taught in the lesson books, the student has a warm-up, a solo piece, and some theory work to back it up. I find this to be very effective. It gives the students a chance to see several examples of each concept, and practice each new concept in different ways until they achieve perfection with it. It also really walks the teacher through each concept very clearly, giving definitions for musical terms and clear instructions for which songs go together. I feel like the order in which concepts are taught also makes a lot of sense.

Overall, it's a good method for a teacher who doesn't know a whole lot about HOW to teach another person to play the piano!

I currently have some of my students on this level, and others on the regular beginner levels. I love how all of the different levels are interchangeable, so gifted students can advance more quickly, and students who need a little extra reinforcement can stay on the lower levels. The map for how this all works is on the back of all of the books, which you can see on the book preview. So many great things about Alfred!

I thought I knew what Democracy was…

I am SO pleased that I’ve read this compelling book… and that I now UNDERSTAND the true meaning of “Democracy.”

The book covers the history of democracy from its roots in Hellenic Greece, through the Magna Carta 1215, up to today. Although it’s certainly not a novel, I found it as gripping as one. I had trouble putting it down (in order to get some sleep).

It took me time to read as I found I couldn’t simply skim through it. I NEEDED to read it ALL, and in detail. And I was rewarded for doing this.

Completing the reading of Democracy Defined: The Manifesto has opened my awareness dramatically. I can see that this is just the start of a very interesting journey for me.

The above summarizes my review. But, if you are interested in further detail, please read on.

After completing my read of Democracy Defined: The Manifesto, and giving the content much thought, I realised that my education has consisted mainly of propaganda (i.e. brainwashing), with very little true learning, and all usually for governmental ulterior motives. I’ve always known “deep down” that if I had a good basic understanding of any subject, that that subject would be a breeze. Seldom does the educational establishment (academia/whatever), or any other “approved” source, ever teach "understanding"… just formulae and stuff to remember for exams, then to forget forever unless it’s a subject you love or your work involves it. Hence our common cries of “What’s the meaning of life?” and “Why me?”

Now, having read the book, it’s easy to understand why there are certain things that I want to know but haven't quite been able to “grasp.” I’ve been programmed (i.e. brainwashed) to not grasp them!

Knowing that you’re a slave isn’t very pleasant. But once you understand “why” you’re a slave (the truth), the fog lifts, and you can start working towards freedom for yourself and everyone else.

This is a must read for people who love freedom!

This is a truly remarkable book that ALL politicians should be compelled to read.....and then to have to take an exam on its contents!

We are all walking headlong into a corporate fascist nightmare of Orwellian proportions because we have forgotten (or didn't know) our Common Law Trial by Jury constitution; the over-riding supremacy of the principles of Magna Carta 1215 over any Statute or Act passed by politicians; and that any sovereign nation has an absolute right to create, issue and control a debt-free and interest-free monetary system free from the usury-based central banking system which creates money completely out of thin air as debt.

This book is a must read for anyone who cares about democracy and our future!

provocative and excellent research on gender differences

Ever wonder why older men are considered attractive (like Harrison Ford and Sean Connery, but rarely older women?
Is beauty in the eye of the beholder when it comes to physical attraction in dating, or is beauty something we can all agree upon?
Why are males more physically aggresive than females? Why are women more involved with the caretaking of children than men?
Is there evidence that gender differences emerge before socialization can occur such as in infancy?
Dr. Geary attempts to explain gender differences from an evolutionary framework by integrating compelling evidence from many social fields such as anthropology, psychology, and sociobiology. Unlike the watered down "Mars and Venus" books, this book is scholarly and offers scientific evidence to support the claims. A must read for any serious student or scholar of the social sciences.

Thorough, concise, convincing

This an extremely comprehensive book. With a bibliography bigger than some books, no one can say that Mr. Geary hasn't done his homework. His ability to distill a vast amount of information into a comprehensible, concise and compelling theory of the reasons for gender differences is remarkable. His writing style, although academicly oriented, is very readable. No words are wasted, and no thoughts are half-baked. Agree with him or not, his arguments are well concieved and well documented. A virtual one stop shop for all the documented differences between the sexes. A great book.

A grand synthesis

This is the most comprehensive book on sex differences--period. The book is objective, thorough, and fair. Further, it synthesizes everything from children's play to sex differences in STEM fields. Anyone, and I mean anyone, who is interested in the topic of sex differences needs to consult this tome.

It would be unfair of me not to point out that the book is not for the faint of heart. It is long, nuanced, and academically written. Geary's goal is not to popularize the topic (a la David Buss) but rather to summarize and synthesize the subject for scholars and interested lay-people. Thus, it is not bedtime reading. However, the issue of sex differences is so intrinsically interesting that the material is often riveting. Let me put it this way: If you've ever gone to an undergraduate party and wondered why men and women behaved so very differently, I would recommend that you consult this book. You don't have to read the entire work to be enlightened. Find the chapter corresponding to your query and read away.

For scholars or graduate students, I would highly recommend reading Male, Female from cover to cover. This is especially true for those who are either not familiar with evolutionary theory or are convinced that evolutionary arguments are wrong. If you still believe that after consuming this book, I am not sure what to say. For scholars who are too busy to read the book in its entirety, the bibliography is invaluable. It contains over references to vital work in the various fields Geary synthesizes.

It is unfortunate that the last chapter (on how sex differences play out in the modern world) was truncated due to constraints of space. However, other scholars have written about this topic at length and the material in the book should allow you to form your own informed opinion on this issue.

This is as good, or better, than the outrageoulsy priced textbooks. Tells you, concisely, everything you need to know about the different art periods. Now I can converse with my artist friends who received degrees ..... I didn't. If you're into art at all, it's fun to know this stuff.

Pretty much exactly what I expected - Art History, not pretty pictures

I saw this book started off with ancient art, which I really have no interest in, but was willing to force my way through it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised when the author almost ordered me to not read parts I wasn't interested in, and that most parts of the book were self contained. I think it really lives up to that.

I read the Kindle edition of this book, and I knew it'd be difficult to read the text and look at the artwork at the same time. I was very pleased to find I really didn't need to. The author did a great job of describing the important parts of the works and what was unique about them, so much so that most of the time I didn't bother actually looking at the photos unless they were incorporated into the text. And I think as long as the reader knows and expects the book to be about the history of art, and not just a collection of pretty pictures, they will be very pleased with this book.

"Inspector Zhang Gets His Wish" I really liked this story

Story One: "Inspector Zhang Gets His Wish" I really liked this story. I liked it because it pays homage to Christie's Poirot. I also liked it because it quietly enumerates the reasonable possibilities of a "locked room mystery." This has a traditional thoughtful inspector, exercising his "little gray cells" to solve a riddle. When Zhang specifies the traditional explanations of a "locked room mystery," his ratiocination brings to mind the techniques of history's first true literary detective--Poe's C. Auguste Dupin.

Story Two: "Lead Balloon." I also liked this story because it shows the damage ( in this case, fatal damage ) that can result from the petty exercise of authority, and the small-minded but malignant pettiness that characterizes those seeking revenge. In this case, both the initial pettiness and the malignant pettiness resulting in a lead-poisoning murder, are feminine in nature. But men are capable of such small-minded revenge too. "Lead Balloon" is a nice, simple story about the essential ugliness and mediocrity of human nature.

Story Three: "Decree Absolute" This is a disaster of a story, impoverished in conception--read that as cliched in conception, and disastrous in execution. The writing is primitive and boring, grammatically incorrect in numerous cases, and just downright amateurish. This is a very harsh assessment, and I sincerely HOPE that this is NOT one of your stories written under a pseudonym. After reading this story, I found myself thinking: "Why the hell did I just spend time reading this story, when life is so short? I could have been in my studio sculpting or lying in bed reading Updike instead. . . .

Story Four: "The Corporate Wolf" I enjoyed this story from start to finish. It has a breezy, cynical tone throughout, and the cynicism plays nicely with my own personal psyche.
The way the details of the supposed nano-particle toxin debacle are discussed is very nicely done. I liked the realism of the sundry considerations. There is also a good "O'Henry" style of twist in the concluding scene of the story. A well-done effort.

Story Five: "The Murder Blog of Wilde Diabolito" The longest--and probably the best--of the the collection's first six stories. The conception is bold, and the boldness of the conception is executed almost perfectly. It is a VERY original technique to take a Wilde poem, "The Ballad of Reading Gaol," ( one of my favorite ballad / lyrical poems ) and use its first series of lines to form the basis of a murder story. I don't think I've ever seen this done before in a "murder" short story. What is particularly nicely done is the chilling handling of the DL cyber-scene website. I didn't see any flaws in this story. But it is a DANGEROUS story. It is dangerous because it is the kind of contemporary story that will appeal to lonely, contemporary misfits, the kind of impressionable, unstable losers who shoot people in shopping malls or schools at random etc. I could easily see this type of story appealing more than it should to misfit losers such as a youthful Joe Salvino, for example. But I was never a misfit loser, and I read "The Murder Blog of Wilde Diabolito" purely for its entertainment value, much as I periodically watch episodes of "The Twilight Zone" around Halloween. Incidentally, if "The Twilight Zone" had still been around as a contemporary TV program, this story would have made a great hour-long episode. I could even see this story being made into a chilling, creepily effective full-length feature film. This story should be peddled by its author to the Hollywood set. . . . An excellent effort.

Story Six: "A Sticky Situation" I also liked this story. Of the first six stories, I placed this story number three in quality, behind Diabolito and the Corporate Wolf, just ahead of the Inspector Zhang story. As I was reading it, I kept thinking of the old Elliot Ness "Untouchables" series of my childhood, back in the early sixties. This story is equipped with very effective, realistic "Godfather"-type dialog.

Story Seven: "The Madmen of Geylang" As I read this story, I felt unmoved; I had neither a positive nor a negative feeling about having read it. I just coasted through it as breezily as if I were browsing through a sports page in a local newspaper. It's not particularly imaginative or well-written; neither is it badly written. It's a hum-ho effort.

Story Eight: "The Lost History of Shadows" This was a much more interesting story than story seven. The story uses a kind of "expostulation" technique, the way, perhaps, that Perry Mason might do a lot of "surprise explanation" at the back end of an old Stanley Gardner "who dunnit." The dialog is nicely realistic, and nothing is forced. The characters, in their essential ugliness, are very believable, as is the situation.

Story Nine: This is another story that I HOPE you didn't write under a pseudonym. I read the story twice--to make sure that there was nothing I might have missed after the first go. I didn't like the story at all the first time I read it, and after having done so a second time, I still didn't like it. This story is the kind of story that is full of gibberish imagery that some authors--especially young self-induglent authors--expect mature readers to take seriously. Such authors are expecting too much. I got the impression that the author who wrote it had the hunger to be compactly profound--it's a fairly short piece--without the requisite talent to match that ambition. It would be like Joyce Carol Oates trying to write like Updike--ambition to excel can only compensate so much for an inherent lack of talent; will-power has its limits.

Story Ten: "The House on Tomb Lane" As I read this story, I felt a similar indifference to what I experienced while reading "The Madman of Geylang." It's a rather routine story of revenge which has a few dramatic moments towards its end. One thing, though, I DID like about the story was the sentence structure; the author uses compact. declarative sentences to push you along through the narrative, it's almost as if you're reading the personal diaries of the main characters bent on revenge. This style of writing is the best way to go for this genre of story.

Story Eleven: "The First Time" I loved this story; it's a great little piece, proving that a story needn't be long to be compelling or profound. Of all the stories in the book, it has by far the most polished objective narration. The narrative is not only polished; it also does a hell of a good job portraying the dazed mentality of the victim. Each of the included details in the narrative effectively distills essence--the mark of a good story-teller / writer. This story, along with the chilling "Murder Blog of Wilde Diabolito,"The Corporate Wolf," and "The Lost History of Shadows," was / were my favorite stories in the collection.

Story Twelve: "Unnatural Causes"Unnatural Causes" has a nice "double-agent" kind of twist to it, because there are two private investigators tangled up in the story--spying and spied-upon. The style of both the narrative and the dialog is forties / fifties--"hard-boiled." The writing actually reminds me of the terse, cynical mood of Robert Mitchum in "film-noir" flicks; it also reminds me a little bit of those old Mickey Spillane paperbacks in the early and middle sixties.

This old saying should be the motto of the collection of short stories which will introduce the interested readers to a world of crimes noboby expects to find in "squeaky-clean" Singapore.
For the 10 authors it has surely been a bit of a challenge to produce crimes and felons intelligent enough to get often away with their misdeeds. And my personal opinion is that my expectations have been amply surpassed!

So let us take a look at this broad view of good, old "Singa-Bore's" crime scene...

The collection opens with a closed room mystery where old-fashioned "Inspector Zhang Gets His Wish" to resolve a crime with the help of his ample knowledge of criminal fiction. And it's written with all the tricks and twists a master writer like Stephen Leather has in his repertoire...

But an anthology has only so many pages and is meant to be an appetizer, a bait to hook the readers, to draw the interest to the - existing - Singapore Crime Scene.
Because - as the local law enforcement people like to remind: LOW crime does not mean NO crime...
And how true ist that ... :)

Some were quite good indeed, some were rather average

I posted this review elsewhere, and I'll put it here as well.

I read another collection of crime stories set in Singapore just before this, "Singapore Noir", and most of the things I said in that review are entirely relevant to this review, because they're very similar books.

As with most collections of short stories, you're inevitably going to find stories stronger than others, and that's the case here. Some were quite good indeed, some were rather average, and some had strong starts but weak finishes.

If I could give this a 3.5 out of 5 then I would, but overall, I enjoyed my time with this book without being left exactly speechless with amazement by anything I read here. It's a quick read and worth doing if you have a particular interest in Singapore.

I have in my personal library a wonderful book: The Mythology of the Energy

An impulse, that I would say it is more than curiosity, it led me always to seek and understand: people, society, life, the laws of this universe we live in, but also myself. So, due to this, I have in my personal library a wonderful book: The Mythology of the Energy, a book that gave me a different perspective to look at and understand things that for me are essential. Their understanding has brought me an inner clarity and a greater motivation : to continue my path of personal and spiritual evolution . I feel so grateful to the author for this wonderful gift that he offered to the world : The Mythology of the Energy book.

Excellent content.

This is not just a book. It might contain some of the deepest wisdom about the Universe, God, Devil, the mechanisms and laws which guvern the world at the deepest level. What might be tricky for the reader is that the information seems to be encrypted sometimes at the first read. Not the kind of book to read quickly and only once but the kind of book to read, study and reflect upon.
