About the Author
ANTHONY BERKELEY was a pen name of Anthony Berkeley Cox (1893-1971), one of the most important figures in the history of British crime fiction. Many of his novels feature the amateur criminologist Roger Sheringham. As well as being the author of many classic detective stories, Berkeley was the founder of the prestigious Detection Club for the finest crime writers.

What a delight!

I read this book after seeing it mentioned over and over again on best-mysteries-of-all-time lists.
Berkeley's novel is built around a fictitious, famed detection club (no doubt based on a real club that had authors such as Christie, Sayers and Dickson Carr as members). The members of this illustrious club set out to solve a mystery revolving around a poisoned box of chocolates. Every sleuth turns in a seemingly plausible solution, each topping the previous person's explanation. Until the end, that is, when a less-than-likely member offers the most surprising (and probably correct) interpretation of the facts.
Not only is this a real puzzle of a book, but it gently and self-consciously tweaks the fair-play traditions and cliches of the ultra-British "Golden Age."
It's very clever, very funny, and reads like a shot. What else do you want from a mystery?

A clever new device for an old-fashioned kind of mystery

It's British, it's amateurs solving a murder, the clues are all in front of you. What's better? And then on top of it all, this book gives us a crime club at which the members present their individual results and critique each other (with some dry wit at the expense of the genre). Great stuff.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK!

This is one of my all-time absolute favorite mystery novels. Written in 1929, a group of mystery lovers (the Crimes Circle Club) meet regularly for dinner and to discuss unsolved crimes, using their mystery-solving talents to try to solve cases that Scotland Yard has been unable to solve. The current case involves a beautiful box of chocolates sent to one person who passes it on to another person who gives it to his wife who then dies when she eats what turns out to be poisoned chocolates. The original sender is unknown. The six members of the Club each take a week to investigate and ponder, then present their explanation of the crime and the killer to the group, with all the details. The great joy of this book is to read six entirely different versions of what happened and whodunnit, each version fitting with all the clues. Each version fully explains all the evidence. Each version seems to be totally correct and plausible. I fell in love with the genius of Anthony Berkeley for his ability to create six different but believable "endings." Most mystery writers can come up with one good ending, but how many writers can come up with six good endings? I had so much fun with this that I gave a "Crime Club" dinner party myself, inviting five other mystery-lover friends, gave them each a copy of this book ahead of time with instructions to read only to the end of the first solution, then to write up their own solution and bring it to the party to share. We each read our own solution over dinner and amazingly we each came up with something different from each other as well as different from any of Anthony Berkeley's solutions. So much fun. For mystery lovers who like to play the intellectual game with the author and figure out a workable solution before the author tells you their solution, I highly recommend this book. Can you come up with all six solutions before the author tells them to you? Can you come up with better solutions? A fun intellectual challenge.

About the Author
Peter Newmark, who was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and has an honorary degree from the University of Trieste, teaches principles and methods of translation at the University of Surrey, and teaches in and directs the English for Translators option in the University of Westminster EFL Summer School. He also examines for the Institute of Linguists' International Diploma in Translation, and has recently taught in Palestine, Hong Kong, Brno in the Czech Republic and General Roca in Argentina. He is Vice President and a Life Member of the Institute of Linguists, a Trustee of the Mary Glasgow Language Trust, and a member of Amnesty International. His numerous publications include Approaches to Translation (1981), A Textbook of Translation (1988), About Translation (1991) and Paragraphs on Translation (1993) and a great number of papers and articles.

NEW MONTANA BIO IS S.F. NOSTALGIA TRIP

For those of us of a certain age, 1981 does not seem all that long ago. In fact, it is a long time ago, and well beyond the memory of many pro football fans. While acclaimed sports author Keith Dunnavant’s new work, Montana: The Biography of Joe Cool is a terrific look at perhaps the greatest of all quarterbacks, not merely giving us the nuts and bolts of a great career and four Super Bowl rings, what separates it is his telling exactly why and how Montana was great.

Dunnavant is like a great baseball manager – think Tony LaRussa or Joe Torre – who presides over a team filled with superstars. But as those in the know . . . know, even if you pencil in names like Rickey Henderson or Derek Jeter, you can still screw things up. Just ask Butch van Breda Kolf, who managed to lose with a Lakers team featuring Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain, all in their primes. In Dunnavant’s case, he has written of superstars: Bear Bryant, Bart Starr, now Joe Montana. He has not screwed it up.

The highlight of Montana is the author’s description of the 1981 season, and in this he has done what great writers do; he has taken us there. We can smell the eucalyptus trees at Golden Gate Park and the stale beer at good ol’ Candlestick. We can hear the cheers and the background noise.

Dunnavant spent some time on the West Coast in the 1980s, but he is a Southern man who specializes in Alabama grid heroics, yet he well describes just what made western Pennsylvania football tick before the coal mines closed; what fall Saturdays were like in South Bend when the Fighting Irish were still the best of the best; and of course how a frail kid dealt with pressures, coaches, and competitors on his way from Pennsylvania to Notre Dame and onto the 1981 49ers, a team with no history of success, coached by an unknown practically drubbed out of the game by Paul Brown, playing in a stadium described by writer Roger Angell as a “festive prison yard.”

It was the fall of ’81, Ronald Reagan’s first year in office. It seems almost black-and-white in the mind’s eye, but Dunnavant colorizes it. First, he tells us about lazy Sunday afternoons at Big Rec Park, where semi-pro baseball teams played on weekends. It is practically a Chicago song; the fields awash in sunshine, a kind of Shangri-la of greenery rising out of the morning fog. Then, the sound of street vendors and ice tream trucks, eventually drowned out by the voice of Don Klein, venerable play-by-play man of the 49ers, heard on transistor radios, describing touchdown passes by Montana amid cheers from the park faithful. Previously oblivious to the ‘Niners, now these people were, week-by-week dedicated pro football fanatics.

Dunnavant takes his time painting this picture, like a good film director willing to invest in character development. Before he gets to the Catch, the Genius and the Super Bowl, he tells of a Rolling Stone concert that October held at the ‘Stick, with Mick Jagger practically making love to a young lovely on stage. He gives us background music for the Bay Area, which was distinctly Journey and Huey Lewis replacing the old Sausalito acid rock. He gives us the socio-politics of sports, the 49ers transforming a city from a dirty, corrupt Dirty Harry laughing stock, perpetually dominated by Hollywood, the Rams, the Dodgers, the Trojans, and the Bruins; suddenly courtesy of Joe Montana and the 49ers, they are a city on the move: Silicon valley, political power shifting to the north post-Reagan, amidst sports dominance.

Then, as torrential rains abated, giving way to sunshine as the 49ers defeated Dallas and Cincinnati in January of 1982 to give the City its first ultimate title in any sport, he takes us to Union Street, the “triangle” where pretty girls adorn happening bars and San Francisco celebrated. For those who experienced it, the city of San Francisco had never looked like that before, and it was changed forever.

The rest of Montana is solid. It particularly delves into Montana’s testy relationships with coaches, which was always fraught with tension from high school to Notre Dame, even with Walsh. Who was responsible for all this success, Walsh the Genius or Montana the superstar? Then there is Montana’s rivalry with Steve Young, the big, tall, Christian stud who finally “elbowed” him out of a job.

It is all here, it is colorful, and a must-read.

Great Book about a Remarkable Player

As someone who has followed the NFL for more than 50 years, I believe Keith Dunnavant has done an excellent job in painting a very definitive picture of one of the all-time great quarterbacks. When Joe Montana was playing, I was busy following various athletes in several sports. I'm not sure I understood how great Montana was, until I read MONTANA. This book put it all together for me, allowing me to realize what a magnificent career he truly had. Montana's playing career evolved like a slow-moving tornado. There were plenty of times when it might have ended, but he kept battling. A lot of athletes quit too early but Montana got the maximum amount out of his talent, and MONTANA does a great job of sketching his personal drama against the backdrop of a very interesting time in pro football. Read it. You will love it.

Exceptional

I very much enjoyed this book and found that in offering so much (history, clearly explained; excitement; lessons in determination and patience; insight into the character of certain regions of the country), the book has an appeal that reaches not only fans of Joe Montana and football in general, but also a broader audience. The book is beautifully crafted and structured—exceptional in the careful selection and placement of detail and in the clever use of language, and very effectively paced. A true pleasure to read.

A revolutionary experiment in recording thought

This short book is not the easiest of reads, but it is very illuminating, showing, as it does, that Montaigne's Essais are primarily and in an original way about a way of thinking rather than about the contents of the thought. Essai was a word meaning an attempt, not a word describing a literary form as it was soon to become; it describes the attempts of Montaigne to capture and record precisely thought processes as they came to him, the precision matched with the fleeting nature of the thoughts, which often immediately evoked their opposites. Cave shows the careful choice of words and metaphor and how Montaigne's apparent randomness and digressions are actually cleverly crafted. There is no commitment to any certainty - hence the motto on one side of a medal he struck: Que sais-je? (Answer: `only one thing with certainty - myself'), matched on the reverse with a pair of scales to represent that one view needs to be weighed against another. He has often been described as a sceptic, and indeed he had quotations from sceptic philosophers painted on the beams of the ceiling in his library/study; but he knew that even scepticism had its drawbacks and dangers, and it is clear that he had some basic beliefs. The book confirms the traditional picture of a sharp-minded but very attractive character.

I have read the English version of this book and it is excellent. However, it should be pointed out that the Spanish version is an abridged version; it does not, for example, contain the useful appendices that are contained in the original U.S version.

Great planted aquarium reference

I think this is one of the most useful books I have seen on aquarium plants and the planted aquarium. It is well organized, offers great planting and maintenance advice, and I refer to it frequently. One of the most useful features is an appendix of plants organized by characteristics, size, light requirements, optimal temperature, suggested location, minimum aquarium size and comments, cross referenced to photos in the book. This feature alone is worth the price of the book!

Fine book but can be better.

I had high expectation for this book after reading many favorable reviews. This book is fine but somewhat less than expected. I was unable to find answers to many specific questions such as a general guide line on CO2 dosages, how to control snail, how to deal with tannic acid leached from drift woods, fertilization techniques. There is a helpful chart of all types of plants and it's care requirement. Unfortunately, many of the plants in the list does not have a picture in the book.

Planted Aquariums

For the most part, Kasselmann's book is an excellent guide to hobbyists interested in establishing a planted aquarium . The photographs are excellent and the methodologies the author suggests are very functional.The overview in the appendix on plants and their light requirements is very helpful. The book would be more beneficial, if the author had included more American products in for example her substrate recommendations etc. Overall , the book is a most welcome edition to the library of anyone interested in establishing a flourishing plant tank.
