About the Author
Gloria Steinem is a writer, lecturer, editor, and feminist activist. In 1972, she co-founded Ms. magazine, and she remained one of its editors for fifteen years. In 1968, she helped found New York magazine, where she was a political columnist and wrote feature articles. Her books include the bestsellers Revolution from Within, Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions, Moving Beyond Words, Marilyn: Norma Jeane, and As if Women Matter (published in India). Steinem has received the Penney-Missouri Journalism Award, the Front Page and Clarion awards, the National Magazine Award, the Women’s Sports Journalism Award, the Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Society of Writers Award from the United Nations, the James Weldon Johnson Award for Journalism, and many others. In 2013, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.

Lovely journey with a vanguard of modern feminism

I taught women's studies for years so I am very familiar with Steinem's work and life. Even so, this book surprised me with its warmth and insight. It is not a biography but more of a road journal. It is not crafted by chronology but by memory and thought stream. I found it very engaging and moving. The opening dedication was heart rending for those of us who lived in those years.
Steinem is the half generation between me and my mother. In the late 60's as my mother was ironing we were watching TV. The women's movement was considered radical fringe, even to my mother's peers who had built planes and careers during WWII only to be sent home afterwards. My mother watched Steinem on TV and said "she is so brave". I asked why and she said "she is so beautiful she could have had an easy life. She has chosen a hard road. It will make your life better". The absurd in the 1960s is now law of the land. It is with that in mind I read this book and appreciated the context of her travels and impact.
This is a fast conversation of a book, not a polemic. I loved it and I hope it finds a wide audience.

How Steinem became who she is and how she influenced the world we live in

This book enabled me to get to know Ms. Steinem better as a person and how she became someone I deeply admire. She’s faced a lot of controversy over the years, but somehow she is able to reach out to people who seem to on the other side of what she believes in without getting angry.
I have to admit I was jealous learning about her friendships with amazing women like Wilma Mankiller and Bella Abzug, but part of how she became who she is and got such friends was through her travels to India and all over America. Steinem encourages women to travel: “Statistically speaking, home is a more dangerous place for a woman than on the road.”
She also writes about how difficult it was for her to decide whether to support Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama back in 2008. When she ultimately came out for Clinton, she got a lot of backlash for it.
What she says to modern Republican women who are conflicted about a pool of choices that are ardently against anything that might help women be mothers on their own timeline and actually get to spend some time with the children they have, she says, “You didn’t leave your party. Your party left you. Forget party labels. Just vote on the issues and for candidates that support equality.”
About her support of Hillary she writes that many people think of her as being “smart, cold, and calculating,” but Steinem has spent time with her and finds her to be “smart, warm, and responsive.” Steinem quotes someone else who talks about how no other candidate knows as much as Hillary when it comes to Eastern Europe.
Steinem’s mother taught her “Democracy is something you must do every day, like brushing your teeth.” I love that. It’s a good thing to keep in mind in these frustrating political times.

Excellent

I have been a fan of Gloria's and a feminist since the 70s. Had no idea her life was as adventurous as it was throughout. it is a large part because of her and her sister feminists and then my sister feminists. I have had a lived life as a whole woman even though it was often difficult and raised hackles and still does in Texas. From Wisconsin to Maryland to Illinois to Washington to Baytown, tx to Houston to Belgium to Shorewood, wi to Dallas, I have trudged as a liberal feminist,seeking compatriots, divorcing and marrying a younger man (43 yrs ago) who got my point! ........After spending 15 yrs with one who didn't.
Thank you for your work, Gloria! My mother missed the ability to transform but retained the awful anger of the prison of home, not being permitted to use her nursing degree by my dad and her inability to tell my dad to go fly. My sister and I, both in our early 70's now worked in all types of nursing and have multiple degrees. Our spouses told us to go for it. See what a difference the movement made for our generation?
I strongly recommend this book and many books about the feminists of the 60's on. Younger women often haven't a clue how we got from the 70's to now for women. We all have battle scars. Don't get me started on Texas!!!!!!!
