Good advice, but way way way too long!

I saw the author on a local news program by chance and I was out of work at the time after being laid off so I thought it would be a good read. The author seemed sincere, humorous, and entertaining on the show---after all the book is a 90 day money back guarantee so I had nothing to lose I thought. I was mainly interested in finding my passion cuz I didn't know what I wanted to do and really wanted to find my calling.

After going to his website--[...] I had trouble ordering the book. I had trouble so I first called and left a detailed message that I was having trouble to his receptionist and to please call me back. Plus I e mailed the author as well. Weeks later my phone callls and e mails went UN-returned. Interesting that happened, considering this author is so big on manners, being polite, and doing the right thing. Kind of hypocritical dont you think. He certainly does not seem to practice what he preaches. Maybe the author doesn't have time for small people like how he felt small driving his clunker to the jaguar dealership and no one paid him any attention. So the fact my emails and phone calls were not returned turned me off BIG TIME. But I got the book anyway off an amazon seller.

When I got the book I was immediately turned off by how long it was(nearly 500 pages in length). But I started reading the book and highlighted what seemed to be important and read it through. I have to give the author credit in doing his research and pretty much covering all the aspects from job intervies, resumes, and being troubled in the work industry. While the author did touch upon the subject of helping you finding your calling, he didn't spend a great deal of depth to the subject which should have consisted of a few chapters I think cuz that was my main problem as I believe most job seekers as well. But he focoused mainly on the interview stuff and resume and boring stats about billionares and the job market which were mainly irrelevant and fillers and so boring.

While the overall tone was that the author equated happiness with doing what one truly loves to do, monetary stuff secondary and less important, I couldn't help but getting a contradictory message from the authors personal experience throughout the book. Yeah this guy is clearly big on status, he loves his jaguar car and designer outfits and clothing, yet still tries to imply that this stuff is really less important. blah blah blah. boring.

As I said before while this author covers the keypoints in the book well, he is way to verbose and mainly just rehashes and reserves the same material over and over in a slightly different form. As if the average job seeker isn't nervous and paranoid enough, after reading all the information in this book just makes the average job seeker more paranoid and insecure with all the freaking facts and same information repeated over and over and over. jeez. I mean what should I highlight and no one can clearly remember all this crap this guy says in the book and then actually rememeber and execute the things the author says in an interview.

Interestingly enough, according to the back cover of the book, over 900,000 copies of this book have been sold yet I am the first one to comment and review it on amazon(go figure). The author also said on the news program that not one person has returned the book yet. And I'm thinking to myself yeah no one has returned the book cause no one has bought the book.

As I said if your main purpose is trying to find your calling and passion, this is not the best book and I would skip it and look elswhere. Yet if you are more concerned about the interview process and how to create a resume/cover letter, then it might worth be picking up. As I said this is a close to 500 page book(if that weren't dissuading enough) that could have been easily condensed down into a 150-250 page book hands down-without exception.

I think this author just gets off on making a book long and likes listening to himself think and right. A waspy snobby new englander who loves his jaguars and designer clothing just looking for more praise and recognition from this book(everyone wants to be a friggin author these days and put out a book), despite what he tells you to the contrary.

How to be a Wildly Effective Compliance Officer is a quick and easy read, written in an upbeat, conversational tone that feels as if you're sitting across the table, sipping coffee with Kristy Grant-Hart as she personally relates her best ideas, anecdotes, and advice. The examples she uses are relevant to those in compliance, but honestly, much of the advice that Grant-Hart gives her readers could be used by anyone that wants to learn more about using influence, persuasion and motivation to better their career.

Highlights for me included the breakdown on the different types of motivations people tend to operate from, and how to use that information to inspire action, and how listening well is one of the strongest tools one has when it comes to interpersonal relationships. I also thought the section on how to be seen as (and become) an expert in the field was really valuable -- I'm already putting some of her ideas into practice!

This was a great read for anyone in (and even those not in) the compliance world. While some of the aspects of this book are focused specifically on compliance, there were plenty of section that can apply to managers and even general employees. This is a must read and had several great ideas that I plan on implementing in my personal and professional life.

Arthur C. Danto is professor emeritus of philosophy at Columbia University. He is the art critic for the Nation and has served as president of the American Philosophical Association. His many books include After the End of Art, Nietzsche as Philosopher, and Art in the Historical Present, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award. In 2003, he was awarded the coveted Prix Philosophe.Jonathan Gilmore is assistant professor of philosophy at Yale University. Good practical introduction to hive

This book is a good practical introduction to hive, with plenty of examples and explanations on how to run your queries and create your tables, as well as to extend data with UDFs.
It's worth mentioning what it does *not* have, that is, it doesn't talk about hive/hadoop internals, nor about administration. If you're also interested in those topics you should have a look at Programming Hive, but if all you need is just to learn the quirks of HSQL, how to optimize your queries and how to extend hive this book has pretty much all you need.

A complete coverage of Hive

After reading a large part of the book, most Hive users will benefit from it, including those who never had been in contact with Hadoop before. There are a few chapters like the "Join optimizations" chapter which I use as a reference when I wish to refresh my memories about which type of join to define and how to express them. Also, user defined functions are well covered with 4 chapters dedicated to it.

Well rounded tome on Hive

Finally a well rounded and well grounded book on Hive. Everyone thinks that HQL is the beginning an end of Hive, without realizing that there is so much more to this interesting technology. Darren has finally come out with this much needed work that explores all the other key aspects of Hive such as it's storage formats and how they are essential for running efficient map/reduce. The more advanced features such as UDFs. The ability to interact with Hive using non-interactive mechanisms like drivers, thrift server etc. I personally found this book to be very useful and eye opening eventough I have been working with Hive for the past two years. I give this work a two thumbs up.

Good book, cheap covers, cheap paper

We bought this book for Christmas for our son's SO, who is a sports trainer. She loved the book, but we were shocked at the thin covers and thin paper it was printed on. We had the covers taken off, laminated, and put back on so that the book might endure some abuse by virtue of being out on a field, court or whatever. They need to put this on more solid paper.
