Excellent, captivating book... but the Kindle edition is very disappointing!

An excellent book sequence, which I read with great pleasure in its lovely first edition when it came out. I enthusiastically give five stars to the book... but I wanted to reread it and got the Kindle edition for convenience. It is *very* disappointing: maps and illustrations are unreadable, italics in the original are missing, long names are sometimes 'hyphenated' in the middle of a line, and, most annoying, footnotes are completely missing, at least on my Kindle Paperwhite (they are available on the tablet edition.)
I wish publishers would be more careful: typesetting is important, computers can do it extremely well, and there is really no excuse for such a botched job.

It's worth holding out until the end!

I'm not going to lie, this is a long book! Book 1 (if you buy the whole Baroque Cycle in one volume like me, it's still divided into 3 books) drags at the beginning but if you've read the Cryptonomicon first, some of the last names will be familiar, just slog through the first couple of chapters, it's worth it! Book 2 at one point was broken in to 2 separate books as well so the dynamic is different but I like that they were combined so that the timeline of events is whole. I love Mr. Stephenson's writing style! The characters are hilarious and you can't help but loving Jack. My one complaint is that the eBook has some issues with format. The quotes/letters at the beginning of chapters in Book 2 (see picture) are garbled and the Table of Contents is a mess.

A work of incredible scope and grandeur

Neal Stephenson is the greatest living writer. Here veering (mostly) from his futuristic scifi , he presents a broad view of 17th and 18th century Europe, featuring Louis 14, the last of the Tudors and first of the Hanovers, Isaac Newton, Wilhelm Leibniz, and the geniuses of the English enlightenment, along with tales on the origins of trade, money, religion, puritans, the birth of the stream engine and computer, and of course cryptography. It is stunning in its scope and characters and provides a fabulous history of life in Versailles and Glorious Revolution England.
Stunning, thoroughly enjoyable, and highly recommended.
