This is one of the excellent solo adventures for the Tunnels and Trolls role playing game. This was pretty groundbreaking at the time to include a decent amount of help and direction for people that enjoyed using the games in that way.

Very Useful, Applicable, on the Cutting Edge of Current Research

I purchased this book for a class I took, and I loved it. It is simply packed with very useful, current research about teaching diverse groups of students as well as methodologies and strategies that are on the cutting edge of modern research. It's one of the most useful teacher's support tools I've ever read, which I did read from cover to cover--all 460 pages. In addition to the 460 content pages, at back of the book is an Appendix section containing hundreds of resources/references, as well as a glossary, and the CEC and INTASC Standards. This is one textbook that I do not intend to sell back. Its contents are valuable and relevent to what classroom teachers are faced with today.

As if all of the above weren't enough, the pages are full of color--very inviting; and the layout of the page contents are very accessible, with important terms printed in bold red. Each page contains useful teaching tips as well as other resources, including online resources that are available for further research, tips, and tools (such as free websites--including virtual tools--that students can access).

By the way, I did purchase the loose-leaf version, and I'm so glad I did. It's not at all cumbersome the way a bound textbook of this size would have been. I simply placed the contents in a 3-ring notebook, and I was good to go. All I needed to do was remove the pages that I was studying so that I could more easily highlight the content. The pages have about a three-inch margin, which was ideal for me to make notations right in the book itself. Very convenient. The loose leaf version was also a little less expensive! Either way, in my opinion, the book is worth every penny!

Overall, I am extremely pleased with my purchase. It's obvious that a lot of thought went into every detail of this book, which I very much appreciate.

the book is really in very good condition!

the book is new and clean. but I have borrowed one and I gave this to a friend and she liked it.
As for the content of this book, I feel like most of the time it is talking about a lot of "common sense" stuff and when you read it, you will say "this is also what I think and so what?". To be frank, I did not find too many "a ha" moments and I have to say that it did not help me that much as i had expected.

Force -- it's a little forced, but gains steam as you read...

I received a free copy of this book for a fair and impartial review.

There. That's out of the way.

Also, I loved the Fight Club series. (Except the last two. I didn't read Zane's story because he reminded me of my brother -- ick! -- and the professor pissed me off.)

This one was... more difficult to read. There's a lot more repetition as we establish a totally new back story for the Russians. It's complex. So complex that it took over the love story. I didn't get a good feel of progression from "I'm not in love with you" to, "I can't live without you." (Although there is quite an epiphany for Lauren at one point in the book, so it's not completely unbelievable.) Also, Dmitry is kinda of dick in some parts. Lauren is more stupidly stubborn than sassy, so at least they're equally matched.

Bottom line: they're believable in their roles as thrown together. It's even more believable that they ended up in the situation they're in, given their personality flaws.

There's fewer fight scenes. More plot. Lots more repetition for plot points that is strictly necessary. Jameson completely delivers on hot sex scenes, so that's always a bonus.

I'd give it a solid three. It's well-written and well plotted. The pacing is fine, except for the excessive repetition. The characters are engaging. Yenin is a bad, bad man and he's got some bad, bad surprises for us. Like, the guy is a scumbag. I want to finish the series simply to find out how they defeat him. Now THAT's a great antagonist.

I kinda can't wait for clinch... because... LEO. And Yenin. And a pretty doctor who wants a hot MMA fighter just to mess with her family's expectations. What could possibly go wrong?

Too much mafia...not enough romance...

As a huge fan of Becca Jameson's "Fight Club" series I was excited to hear that she had a new series coming out and wanted to get my hands on it. Sadly, this book did not pack the same punch that I have come to love from Ms. Jameson. To be honest and fair, I am not a huge fan of mob or mafia based story lines so that was off the bat a bit of a bummer for me to see that these seem to be very Russian mafia based. Trying to put that aside I was disappointed how quickly Lauren and Dmitry were thrown together. Where was the tension and build up. There was SO much detail put into the whole mafia system and people involved in that I felt that the romance between the H and h took a back seat. There were several times I had to skim a bit to get to some more parts with Lauren and Dmitry. The one thing that holds true for this author is that she writes a SMOKING hot love scene. That is for sure something that you can always rely on. Overall, it was just not a huge hit for me but if you are into the whole mafia idea it might punch things up for you. I am intrigued by the set that this one ended off with for the next book though so we will have to see if the series continues on with this same format.

Love this book

Dmitry Volikov was one of Anton Yenin's fighter which put him in the direct path of Lauren Schneider. Helping Lauren escape Anton's grasp after he kidnapped her, Dmitry has vowed to keep her safe. Six months later though Lauren is ready to bolt, believing that Dmitry hates her, she couldn't be more wrong. With Anton still a threat, Dmitry is looking for an escape plan that will keep both of them safe.

Loved this, the chemistry between Dmitry and Lauren sizzles off each page. Lauren is feisty and buts head with Dmitry but I think it elevated the passion between them. I can't wait for the next book, if you like over the top alpha males this is the book for you.

The modern System offense was made famous by Paul Westhead and LMU and then used successfully for years at Grinnell College, in Iowa, and other schools.� We combine this non-stop attacking style of play with the life lessons made famous by John Wooden and his Pyramid of Success as the core of our teaching.� We will present the Mongoose System in components and you can learn and then teach it in stages so as to not overwhelm your players.� In many ways, the Mongoose System is designed to be a "Lombardi-esque" type of game philosophy which encourages fundamentals first, execution second, and grit third.� Your players, no matter their base ability, will improve using this philosophy and will only love the game, even more.�

By playing the Mongoose System in the middle school and youth levels, your team will be dictating the pace of the game and your team will feel in more in control whereas your opponents will feel hurried, anxious and disorganized. It does create an "organized chaos" on the floor to your advantage when your players continue to move.
Lightning warfare isn't a new concept.� It's not a 20th century concept, just ask the Mongols. But in basketball, this lightning warfare allows for maximum dividends in several areas of the game.� First, it deprives your opponents the chance to set up a structured offense.� By trapping all the way down the court, you force your opponents to find alternative methods for advancing the ball up the court and then attack your basket from different launch points which only add to their confusion.

The Mongoose System emphasizes athleticism, but you don't need ten "Amazons" or ten Presidential Fitness Award winners to be successful.� You need eight to ten, with ten being the best number (with 5 or 6 minute stopped time quarters at this level) young people who want to compete.� You need players who want to part of something bigger than themselves, and are willing to play with reckless abandon.� It emphasizes team "dance," in that, off-ball movement becomes more important than on-ball, and everyone is moving and participating on every play during the minute they are on the court.� They must not stop moving as the energy they exert serves to drain your opponents as none of it is wasted motion.�

Finally, the Mongoose System emphasizes personal courage and commitment regardless of size and strength.� Your players are required to believe in themselves and their teammates in order for this to work and while on the court on offense they will, to paraphrase Coach Wooden, be quick to the spot, but don't hurry the shot.� On defense, they will assume the role of whirling dervishes, and consume the spirit of your opponents and deny them the will to fight.

"Run to Win": Fun, fast, and furious youth basketball

If you're a basketball traditionalist, this book probably isn't for you. However, if you're interested in a system that youth and middle school players will have a lot of fun playing, the Mongoose System is definitely worthy of consideration.

Coaches Brock, Kyler, and Szekely have compiled a synopsis of a system that is loosely based on what Coach Paul Westhead implemented at Loyola Marymount in the late 1980s/early 1990s. It's a system based on running the whole game, on both offence and defence, to the point where your opponent simply can't keep up and eventually breaks down. Speed is the essence of everything that happens within the Mongoose system and it's no wonder that the authors suggest player t-shirts that say "Organized Chaos".

"How," one may ask, "can players play like that for a whole game?" The answer is simple and it draws from hockey, of all places: frequent line changes, and the beauty of this is that everyone plays, everyone is expected to shoot (frequently, even), and everyone is fully engaged, all the time. If that doesn't sound like fun at the youth and middle school level, what does?

I have a confession, though: I've not yet implemented this system with my own teams, so I can't vouch for it but I can promise you if I go to my young players this winter and ask them, "Do you want to play all the time and be able to shoot as often as you want without worrying about missing", what do you think their answer is going to be?

I like the book because it contains more than enough information for a coach to implement this system. It contains everything from season strategy outlines to statistical objectives to ways to draw parents into the system. It's simply an excellent starting point and I recommend that every coach read it even if he/she already has a system in place, as it'll make coaches re-examine their own coaching philosophies.

If the book is missing anything, it's a clear delineation among the three different levels ("Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo"). As I discovered in follow-up conversation with Coach Brock (who kindly agreed to discuss the book with me via telephone), the delineation is meant to be flexible, and I accept that, but the book would benefit from some breakdown between what pure beginners could handle vs. what more advanced players could do. In addition, there are a number of small grammatical errors that an extra edit could easily tidy up.

Bottom line: if you're coaching young players, read this book. If the name of the game is fun, you'll want to consider the Mongoose System. Besides, what kids wouldn't want to walk around school wearing t-shirts that say "Organized Chaos"?

Fast Break Basketball at the Youth Level!

Basketball has become a very slowed down game, but there are possibilities to speed up the game not just at the college level, but at the youth level as well. Run to Win is an excellent book that details how basketball doesn't have to be all motion offense at the youth level. This book offers detailed plays and schemes that will get your team running and winning by outscoring and getting more possessions than your opponents. Run to Win is a book Paul Westhead, Bo Kimble & the late Hank Gathers would be proud of.

The Mongoose System helped us to implement something quickly that will also add excitement and fun for the rest of the season

With Tryouts on Tuesday, one practice on Thursday and our first game on Saturday, The Mongoose System helped us to implement something quickly that will also add excitement and fun for the rest of the season. Running the system's primary break and with a mentality to "shoot to pass", our team of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys were able to score 32 points in the first half, that's more than they had scored in a whole game last season, and end up winning 60-50. Every player played at least 8 minutes as well as at least took one shot. We are looking forward to our next game after we have had a couple of practices under our belts.

Great and fun to read resource with a serious subject

Bulls#*t can and should be a fun and often hilarious topic of discussion, but it can quickly become a sad and sometimes horrifying subject once one realizes just how many absurd beliefs are held by so many people. With that in mind, it is great how Collins writes in a way that is both entertaining and yet still serious. This book is not a complete expos� of all the bull out in the world, but Collins does expose the important underlying motivations and deceitful tactics used by various bull-mongerers so that readers can become proficiently equipped to spot bull for themselves. An obvious problem to this book is that its message will likely be ignored by those who need it most. As Collins explains throughout the book, peddlers of bull are too skilled at dodging, denying, and/or ignoring legitimate arguments and evidence to benefit from the more than reasonable message found in his book. But the book's likely inability to better inform those bull-believers who need it most provides more reason for the rest of us to utilize this resource and others like it. Just as vaccinations for infectious diseases become more beneficial to the proximate population as more individuals are immunized, the same goes for our society's ability to cultivate communities where individuals can think critically and not be duped by bull.

Irrationality too deep to be explained in such a short book

This book portrays itself as scientific antidote and critical thinking tool to fight birthers, truthers, holocaust denialists, conspiracy theorists and other quacks. Unfortunately, these targets are just too quirky: science cannot do much about, maybe psychiatry might. It is good to be critical, and Collins provides some really nice examples of uncovering internet rumors and misquotations. But you cannot really fight JFK assisination conspiratists with science.

I would recommend three more constructive books:
*Michael Shermer: Why do people believe weird things (this one tries to understand where do all these strange beliefs come from, and not just offer science antidote).
*Massimo Pigliucci: Nonsense on stilts (this one squarely puts science against law, religion, pseudoscience, and shows how science is different)
*Moti Ben-Ari: Just a theory (basics of philosophy of science in very digestible format: induction, hypothesis, statistics; plus sociology of science, postmodernist critique, reductionism...)

A timely and entertaining guide to critical thinking

The author of this book exposed one of the vilest hoaxes of the 2012 presidential campaign, that Barack Obama's mother once posed for pornographic photos. The author located the magazines that originally published the photos and, on his blog Barackryphal, he showed the photos were published when Obama's mother was only 15 years old and years before she moved to Hawaii where the photos were supposedly taken.

This excellent bit of research alone would make his new book on the art and science of detecting nonsense worth a look. However, he also turns out to be a clear, incisive writer who can tell an interesting story to illustrate a point.

The result is that even inveterate skeptics will find this book a good read. It provides a choice selection of recent hoaxes, conspiracies and false rumours to demonstrate how the tools of skepticism work. Perhaps because the author is a lawyer, the chapter on pseudolaw (legal theory that relies on frivolous arguments) is especially interesting.

As befitting a book on searching for truth, there are extensive notes and references at the end.

Critical book for surgeons and ER docs

Are you going into gen surg or ER? What about pediatrics or ob/gyn? Rural family med? Do you plan on providing healthcare to human beings?
If yes to any of these questions, then you definitely can benefit from this book. It gives a great breakdown of the various causes of abdominal pain as well as a guide to performing a thorough yet also time and cost effective differential diagnosis. This book will be of most benefit to ER and surgery physicians but anybody who deals with patients (hospitalists and rural family med especially) will likely benefit.
It is not a quick reference type of book, but if you invest the time to read it and understand the concepts you will find your need for such materials vastly reduced.

As an Emergency RN, I was recommended this book by one of the physicians several years ago and have always had this in my wish list. I finally took the plunge and have not regretted it. It should make every provider realize how poor there hands on assessment really is, as Cope made these diagnoses without the aid of the CT Scan. At work sometimes, I think the radiologists are the only real diagnosticians anymore.

Rin Tanaka, a Japanese editorial photographer, writer and American men s vintage fashion historian, was born in Japan in 1970. He started hitting U.S. roads to study black music history and play guitar since 1991 during his college days. After working for an advertising company in Tokyo, he moved to San Clemente, California in 1998 to research American vintage fashion and street culture more deeply. Thus far, he has written 21 books about the history of vintage men s clothing, traveling to U.S. cities every month for over 15 years. His books have been published by his self-publishing company and other publishers. In addition, kulture recycle vintage fashion event Inspiration, presented by him, has been held in Los Angeles every 2nd weekend of Feb. since 2010.
