The best quick reference for solid mechanics

This is one of the best concise reference for a wide variety of topics in soild mechanics. The authour covers the most fundamental and important topics and this can be a helpful reference to anyone right from a begineer to advanced level researchers. The Maple and Matlab FEM codes accompanying the chapters are wonderful and illustrate the concepts in a very good way thus encouraging budding researchers to understand those topics by practicing them using an FEM code. A very well written text.

Good to review not to learn

I am using this book to teach a solid mechanics course. The book style is as if someone has put his powerpoint lectures together and made a book. Many important subjects which need to be discussed in detail have been just mentioned in multiple bullets with very short statements. For example, the author does not prove the strain compatibility equations and just mentions them without even discussing intuitively or mathematically why we need those equations. Another example is Von Mises criterion which is not only not proved from shear strain energy point of view but also not well explained and compared to other models such as Tresca's criterion. There are many many other examples as such in this book which I think makes it improper to use as a textbook. The only good thing about the book is the fact that it contains a lot of material and it is very likely that you can find a formula which you do not remember in it. However, if you do not remember a topic you better look it up in other books.

Legendary for a Reason!

I had Prof. Bower as my primary instructor for a freshman engineering course in dynamics and vibrations, and his clarity in lectures most certainly comes through in this textbook. It covers an absurd range of topics (I've taken graduate level courses in continuum, elasticity, and plasticity since then, and they each cover about as much material as one or two chapters of this book) in great detail as well. Though this book may not be for college students just starting in engineering, I can most certainly recommend it for mechanical engineers at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels. If you are doing any coursework into the theory of mechanics, don't hesitate to get this; it has been one amazing reference work. After all, there is a reason why engineering professors at some of the top programs in the nation use this text with their courses.

I enjoyed reading How to Lose 20 Pounds in 21 Days by Tiffany McCoy. This is the second book, which I have read by Mrs. McCoy. It was very informative. I saw the success which she had in her other book (in which she lost over 100 lbs.), so I decided to invest in this book as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires to lose 20 lbs in 21 Days. She has provided the necessary tools for success IF they are followed!!! The steps are expertly outlined...beginning with food journaling and ending with exercising. She stresses the importance of eating breakfast daily and drinking water. Mrs. McCoy employs simple tips for losing the weight in such a short period of time.

Paul Allen's newest edition is the definitive book on artist management for several reasons. Far beyond a "how to" tutorial on the basics of the business, he illuminates the nuances of managing client personalities and sizing up an artist's motivations, ambitions and vision. His real-world perspectives, experiences and practical advice on career guidance are essential reading for both prospective managers and artists. This is especially true because of the high caliber of sources Professor Allen uses; they are among the top names in the business. Paul's insider knowledge and discussion on power players, getting calls returned and networking to build relationships are worth the price of admission alone.

Extremely well-written and easy to follow, this edition is updated with timely new information on the relevant aspects of social media, the increasing impact of streaming vs. downloads/physical sales and the increasingly common "360" deals. It's an excellent overview for aspiring artists and managers alike, and it's full of advice and wisdom. Anyone studying this business would do well to begin their focused education here, if only to establish a working vocabulary for the industry. The end of each chapter provides an extensive list of resources for continued reading as well. If you read this, also read the books listed in the resource section of each chapter for an extensive self-education. There's nothing quite like a common vocabulary for efficient communication between all the facets of the music industry.

This edition has a lot of new information and some helpful examples. If you enjoyed one of the earlier editions, I suggest that you get a copy of this new edition. About the Author
This is the first novel from Ray Norris, a British and Australian astrophysicist whose day-job is to research the origin and evolution of galaxies shortly after the Big Bang. He also researches Australian Aboriginal astronomy, and the astronomy of British Bronze-age stone circles and other megalithic monuments. As well as over 250 professional publications, he frequently appears on radio and TV, and performs in a stage show called "The First Astronomers". For relaxation, he walks the moors of Dartmoor and the Australian bush, and writes. And, no, he's not Owen.

Great story, engrossing read!

Norris combines historical facts, his experiences as an academic, and the summers he spent surveying stone circles across Britain to write an engrossing, emotive story about the life-changing events of a young academic and his emotional quest for revenge and justice. Graven Images is a fantastic read with a great story-line, well-developed characters, and a few surprising twists. Highly recommended!

often frightening, always fascinating

"Graven Images," a novel by Ray Norris, is often frightening, always fascinating. Owen Davies, a postdoc in biology at Cambridge, is a self-absorbed, short tempered, very bright young man who is saved from himself by his intense bonding with his beloved girlfriend, Sarah. When Sarah is killed in an accident, this self-sufficiency totally crashes and Owen wastes a lot of very good scotch and acrimony succumbing to his grieving until he is galvanized by the need to avenge her death. Convinced that this was the work of Wiccan murderers, he carefully inserts himself into their midst.

Norris writes beautifully of the British countryside, amusingly of the underside of academia, and knowingly about Wicca -- the witch cult that came to prominence in the British Isles in the 20th century, but which has serious claims to ancient religious roots going back to the Druids 2000 years ago, or perhaps even to the stone circles of the Bronze Age. As Owen pursues Sarah's killers he finds that there are many foolish people mainly attracted to Wicca by the goth persona, many very fine and intelligent folk who truly believe in its authenticity as an ancient religion, and those who are after power, both religious and political.

By the time Owen finds himself in a position to ascertain the killers, he has dropped into a quagmire as frightening as the submerged pools of black water on Dartmoor where, once below the skin, it is often impossible to find your way back up. But Owen has always felt a great affinity with the moors and the stone circles set about them in those ancient wind and mist swept spaces, and he grows fascinated with the search for the Book of One which would provide the Wiccan with their longed for authenticity. While vengeance continues to drag him ever deeper, this pure pursuit of the possibility of discovering truths about man and his early relationship with his world, buoys and saves him. Okay, he gets a little outside help, too, but why spoil the story?

There are many books about witches that purport to entertain, and there are many thrillers that are clearly written to be movies, but Ray Norris has written a novel in the truest sense. Blessed be.

My great GREAT choice for this summer!

Even not being a native english reader, I got completely immersed into the plot of this story. The characters are so authentic (I am a scientist myself) and the story is so well defined that I could not stop reading! Great mixture of science, history, religions, traditions, and most of all, the deepest human emotions. A "must read" fully recommended.
