a book full of twists and Dilemmas for a young girl reaching adulthood

This book is beautifully written. It is an account a young girl who wants to start dating. She wants to break free and experience independents however she also feels she needs to listen to those more wiser than her. What does she do! Lots of twists to the story.

An interesting story with suspense and steam.

Our heroine, talks about that phase of her life which most of us find the most confusing, as well as the most memorable. She has been a good student, she has money too, the only thing she doesn't have is light-heartedness about dating, boys, sex, etc. She knows she's not as frank and outgoing like the other girls(mostly because of her family background), but has just made up her mind to start experimenting with an untouched part of her life.

As she relates her story and experiences, there are attractions, distractions, her religious mental make-up, and the strong opinions of her parents, that keep confusing her on matters of dating, guys, love & sex. Twists in the tale are ensured with the different characters and their roles in Joanie's life. There is a grilling suspense that builds later on where good guys are thought of as bad ones, there is a chance of deceit, and more stuff like that.
Very interesting.

A glimpse into someone else's world, their choices...and the consequences

Davis’ book follows a young woman through the many trials and tribulations that come from negotiating adulthood and the inherent tension between the desire for independence versus respecting the opinions of those with more life experience. The issues it touches on are pertinent to everyone and what’s fascinating is watching the choices Joanie makes and then seeing the consequences unfold…Not that you’d see them all coming, though! There are definitely a few twists that’ll keep you guessing!

The authors, both British art historians, are joined by 12 other experts in this field to present an amazing array of multicultural interpretations of the world as condensed into symbolic images. They define a symbol as "something that a particular culture considers to mean something else." Each entry features a blue line drawing of the symbol in a generalized pictographic style. Although the quantity of images could have been overwhelming, the symbols are extremely well organized into numbered columns that correspond with the alphabetical front index, or "symbol finder." This index is invaluable because the text itself is composed of eight thematic chapters, among them "Heaven and Earth," "Characters and People," and "Objects and Artifacts." Pertinent cultural meanings for the symbols are refreshingly worldwide, covering Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, the Americas, and the Pacific. Many of the connotations are religious in nature, with referrences ranging from Aztec beliefs to Mesopotamian mythology to major contemporary religions. The editors encourage readers to "dip" into the book and then follow the threads of capitalized cross references. After doing so, one will never think the same way again about eyes, rabbits, roses, swastikas, the color white, and 995 other things. Rupert Shepherd is a freelance writer specialising in art history. Since graduating from the Courtauld Institute he has written two books on Renaissance art, and is currently working on a book about the history of the Palace of Westminster. Rowena Shepherd is an art historian currently working for English Heritage. Rachel Kennedy is a curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum. She specializes in the art of the 18th century, and has contributed entries on the symbolism of art to a number of dictionaries and encyclopaedias.

Complete Guide to Symbols and Their Meaning

"1000 Symbols" is an extensive compendium of symbols from around the world. What makes this book unique from other books on symbols is the worldwide approach. A specific symbol can mean widely differing things in different cultural contexts and the authors do a wonderful job of examining each interpretation. Each symbol has a number that is cross-referenced to the index at the beginning of the book making them easy to find. In addition, the symbols are categorized into eight general categories for easy browsing. The categories are Heaven and Earth, Characters and People, Body and Actions, Living Creatures, Mythical Beasts, Flowers, Plants and Trees, Objects and Artefacts, and Abstracts. Each of these categories is also subdivided.
Each of the symbols discussed has a line drawing of the symbol along with a detailed description of what the symbol meant to different groups, how it is used today, various ways it was drawn, etc. If you want to know about the various symbols that surround us this is an excellent place to find out. A highly recommended reference for anyone interested in symbols.

I am sorry to report of my disapointment with this title. While it does contain some interesting research, the symbols illustrated are all modernized graphics. The use of traditional and historic depictions of the symbols would have made this work much more readable.

Jobinesh Purushothaman works with Oracle as a consulting solutions architect. In his current role, he is involved in the design and architectural decisions of various products that use Java EE and Oracle Application Development Framework technologies. Occasionally, he speaks at industry conferences, such as JavaOne and the Oracle Technology Network Developer Day. Jobinesh authored his first book, Oracle ADF Real World Developer's Guide, in 2012 for Packt Publishing. You can find his blog at http://www.jobinesh.com. He holds a master of science (MSc) degree in computer science from Bharathiar University, India, and a master of business administration (MBA) degree from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), India. Overall good coverage of JAX-RS using the Jersey reference implementation

Much improved from the 1st edition. Strange that the 1st edition author was not involved with this edition. Overall good coverage of JAX-RS using the Jersey reference implementation. Good coverage on JSON processing using Jackson and GSON (missing Moxy though). My issue is the use of Netbeans instead of Eclipse which is more widely used. Also missing coverage of server side Oauth security. These issues made me drop one star from this otherwise great book on REST.

This is one of the good book available in the market today to begin your journey with REST API development using Java. Chapter 1, introduces you to basics of RESTful web APIs. Chapter 2, teaches you JSON and JSON parsers. The first two chapters are introductory and easy to follow. You may truly enjoy these chapters if you are new to REST. Chapter 3 , introduces you to JAX-RS and Chapter 4 takes you to advanced topics in JAX-RS. Chapter 5, takes you through some of the Jersey offering which you may find very useful while dealing with many real life use cases. Chapter 6 introduces you to security - not in depth, however basics are covered very nicely. Chapter 7 teaches common formats used for Description and Discovery of RESTful Web Services. I'm not aware of any other book on Java REST API covers this topic. Chapter 8 gives you some useful tips for designing REST API- another well written chapter. You will also find downloadable code samples for each chapter in the Packt Pub site, which makes your life easier while learning complex topics such as building custom entity types. Overall this is great asset for anyone who want to learn(beginner or intermediate) RESTful web API development using JAX-RS.
