About the Author
Peter J. Collings is the Morris L. Clothier Professor of Physics and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Swarthmore College. He has conducted experimental research on liquid crystals for more than twenty-five years. He is the coauthor of introduction to Liquid Crystals: Chemistry and Physics and the coeditor of Handbook of Liquid Crystal Research.

A concise, entry level book for laymen, Collings covers the fundamentals of liquid crystals such as phase diagrams, defects, applications, textures, etc. The absence of derivations is either a plus or minus depending on your background. He gives the reader all the information needed to start from ground zero.

Excellent analysis

After reading FC Barcelona a tactical analysis books I knew what to expect from this book. However it proved to be even better than the Barcelona’s books. The book is written in a progressive way which makes it easier for the reader to understand the tactics of Jose Mourinho. The attacking part presents the most common combinations used by Real Madrid players during the games either on the flanks or through the middle. Then examples are given of how these combinations were used by Real Madrid in match situations so as to create and attack the free space, to outnumber the opposition on the flanks, to use the free space on the weak side etc. It also contains excellent analysis of how the team made the negative transitions, something that in my opinion is the key for a successful team. In fact the book points which are the appropriate positions of the players during the attacking phase so as to make it easier to react when possession is lost. Finally it explains using match situations how the positive transitions were made.

His friends frequently use homophobic slurs, and his parents say things like they are glad he is "normal," not like his gay classmate who had his skull cracked recently. James meets Topher, whom he secretly starts dating, and considers coming out to his friends and family. But before he can, someone steals some of his letters and starts the process for him. Logan shines at creating strong, nuanced characters who behave realistically and unpredictably. Despite their tendency to trash-talk and their reliance on horrible slurs, James and his friends have deep, meaningful, complex bonds. The protagonist's story is about struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. While he knows who he really is, he is uncomfortable with facing this. In a letter to God, James asks him for "a cure for boys who like other boys." Though readers may be turned off by the near-constant homophobia that permeates the story, Logan's look at a boy reconciling his private and public selves is well written and affecting. A coming-out, coming-of-age story and much more.

I agree with some of the other reviewers that this book will be a good learning tool for teens, parents, and teachers. It's a great pleasure to read, too. I hope it becomes a YA classic. I love the witty letters the main character writes and never means to send. I love that the supporting characters we've come to know turn out to be truly supportive (in different, realistic ways) to the protagonist. I hope they are at least partially based on real people. (There are some exceptions, of course--sadly, that's reality, as is teenage--and young adult--drinking.) I agree with a previous reviewer that the alcohol issue is a problem, but I think the author DOES deal with it by showing negative consequences. Yeah, hooray for Kenneth Logan and his first novel. May there be many more!

Everyone Can Learn Something from True Letters!

True Letters is at once engaging and enlightening. On one level it is a great YA coming-out/ coming-of-age novel with a compelling plot, interesting characters, and a vivid picture of high school culture. On another level, everyone, regardless of age, can learn something from this honest yet tender story. As a high school educator, who has made my share of mistakes with LGBTAQIA students, I can honestly say that True Letters of a Fictional Life should be required reading for all teachers, parents, students, and allies. Kenneth Logan has given us something very special here because his work is changing our world for the better!

This book is a funny and tender coming of age story that was also ...

This book is a funny and tender coming of age story that was also a great mystery. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down! All of the characters were so real, I was able to bond with them easily. The book handled the issue of coming out so honestly, and truly shows the pain and heartache that I imagine so many young gay and lesbian people go through. This book felt very personal to me, even though I am a heterosexual, married woman. Maybe it's because so many of the characters in Logan's book are so relatable and remind me of many of my friends from my teenage years. This is a great book for people of all ages and genders to read - teenagers, parents, teachers, gay or straight. My 14 year old will be reading it as part of his summer reading this year, and my daughter will read it as soon as she is old enough.

Has Book and Chapter Links

Other reviewers complained that there are no chapter links. I'm not sure if it is new, but the version I downloaded recently has both book and chapter links. At the main table of contents, there are links to all the books of the Bible in a single list. Once you select a book, the first page of each book has links to all the chapters in that book. It works really well that way. I can find any verse in three clicks. And the whole Bible is searchable. That along with the ESV translation means a great addition to any Kindle.

Before you buy the "premium bonded" . . .!

I'll start by saying the ESV version of the Bible is wonderful. This presentation of scripture is eloquent and flowing. I would recommend this version to just about anyone.

Now about the binding . . . I own two ESV bibles. I purchased the Heirloom Reference Edition about a year ago, and was beyond delighted when I received it. The Heirloom binding is thick and luxurious. The pages are also thick, egg-white in color, with very generous margins, and "large" print. It is one of the finest Bibles I own.

I wanted a second less expensive ESV Bible to purchase for outside-the-home use. Thus I purchased and began using the "Premium Bonded Leather" version on July 1, 2006 (three months ago). First of all, it does not feel like bonded leather at all. More like "leatherflex" (which I believe is textured paper, made to look like leather). More importantly, the binding performs like leatherflex. It does not bend; it creases. Yesterday after only 90+ days use, the spine SPLIT. I can identify about four additional places that will also split in a matter of weeks. Also, the edges are worn down. I have always wanted a worn-out Bible like Kay Arthur's or Beth Moore's, but not this soon. This Bible is in worse shape than the Bibles that I have used extensively for several years.

If you are interested in this version, I would recommend purchasing the Heirloom Edition. Granted, it is quite a bit more expensive; however, a Bible is a lifetime purchase, and the Heirloom comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Kindle version could use some improvements!

This is a review for the Kindle version! I love this version of the scriptures, so no complaint there. This is the full ESV version. Navigation is where I have the problem. Like another reviewer of a different version, I have some problems getting around. You can choose a book from the table of contents like you would choose a chapter in a regular book, then pick the chapter, but then you must page forward to get to the verse you want. This could be time consuming for long chapters. Also, verse #'s are the same size as the text so they can be a little hard to find. I have used MyBible on my treo for a couple years now and the navigation on it is much easier! Also, MyBible gives you the option to switch between other purchased versions with 1 click while staying at the same point. I will be carrying my Kindle to Sunday service and to Bible studies for at least a couple weeks unless I can't keep up while searching verses, then it would have to be back to the treo or hard copy, which I would hate because I love the Kindle screen and size so much better. I hope other publishers working on Kindle versions take the ease of navigation into consideration.

Susan Phillips is Professor and Director of the School of Public Policy and Administration, Carleton University.�She is a Visiting Fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge, conducting research on women in leadership in the third sector.�She is also a Visiting Fellow�at the Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy, Cass Business School, City University, where she is working on regulation of the sector.

Steven Rathgeb Smith is Professor and the Waldemar A. Nielsen Chair in Philanthropy at the Public Policy Institute at Georgetown University. Dr. Smith was the editor of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly (NVSQ), the journal of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) from 1998-2004. His current research focuses on the citizen engagement and advocacy roles of nonprofit organizations, the evolving position of nonprofit social welfare organizations within the welfare state in Europe and the US, and the regional variation in foundations in the US.

The text then shows how to solve linear least squares problems, provides a detailed numerical treatment of the algebraic eigenvalue problem, and discusses (indirect) iterative methods to solve a system of linear equations. The final chapter illustrates how to solve discretized sparse systems of linear equations. Each chapter ends with exercises and computer projects.

About the Author

Nabil Nassif is affiliated with the Department of Mathematics at the American University of Beirut, where he teaches and conducts research in mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, and scientific computing. He earned a PhD in applied mathematics from Harvard University under the supervision of Professor Garrett Birkhoff.

Jocelyne Erhel is a senior research scientist and scientific leader of the Sage team at INRIA in Rennes, France. She earned a PhD from the University of Paris. Her research interests include sparse linear algebra and high performance scientific computing applied to geophysics, mainly groundwater models.

Bernard Philippe was a senior research scientist at INRIA in Rennes, France, until 2015 when he retired. He earned a PhD from the University of Rennes. His research interests include matrix computing with a special emphasis on large-sized eigenvalue problems.
