About the Author
Peter Avery currently teaches linguistics at the University of Toronto. He is involved in teacher training throughout the TESL Certificate programme at George Brown College, Toronto, Canada. His research interests include theoretical phonology and second language acquisition.

An excellent resource

I am an ESL teacher/tutor and I borrowed this book from the library just to peruse it. It ended up having such a wide variety of useful information that I decided to purchase it. Especially interesting is the section on pronunciation issues specific to common native languages of ELL's. Highly recommend this book as a resource for anyone interested in teaching or learning American English.

Excellent, detailed textbook

An extremely detailed instruction manual for teaching American English to speakers of other languages. This was required reading for one of M.Ed classes (major in ESL education), and it is highly recommended for all ESL teachers.
