*Mild Spoilers* Buy it for Joan Wolf's The Antagonists

A combination of short stories rarely works in my favor. If I am lucky I find one, two, maybe even three of them likable but rarely is there a story that I find outstanding. It has to have just the right mixture of my favorite devices that I find important in a wonderful romance: chemistry, great dialog, some angst. I have to BELIEVE the story could have happened the way it was written. And, because of this, I have a tag 'anthologies worth it for one story'. This is such a book.
I was deeply disappointed with Mary Jo Putney's MAD, BAD AND DANGEROUS TO KNOW. It was the lowest rated. A newly-widowed young woman that has just found out she is pregnant and a gambler that will be hanged in a few days meet. Insta-love, insta-sex: Aagh! I know Ms. Putney can write a better story. *2 stars*
OMG! I so loved Joan Wolf's THE ANTAGONISTS! Narrated by the heroine in first person tense (something I normally don't like), it was a refreshing romance that began when the heroine and the hero first meet at the young ages of 11 and 16. To say they get along would be a big misconception. A healthy love of horses, a favored but ugly dog the size of a pony, three men who eventually try for her hand in marriage and the awesome dialog and chemistry worked in this story's favor. It is a coming of age romance. I. Simply. Loved. It. *5 stars*
When I started to read Edith Layton's BURIED TREASURE, I knew I had read it before. So I did some research and found it in the DASHING AND DANGEROUS anthology and copied my review. It hasn't changed from two years ago. This is the romance for all of you who love an anti-hero.
Edith Layton takes the reader back to 1699 Long Island, New York in BURIED TREASURE. A man is believed dead and buried alive by his companions whom are pirates. Saved by a virtuous family, he decides he is going to seduce the daughter. In the meantime, he will wait for the men who left him to return to retrieve the buried treasure. Dan Silver has had a rotten life, you can understand why he behaves the way he does. *4 stars* because Hannah deserves love.
Patricia Rice's FATHERS AND DAUGHTERS: three words. Too much anger. *2 1/2 stars*
Mary Balogh's PRECIOUS ROGUE was also found in the DASHING AND DANGEROUS anthology. It takes place in 1818 England between a truly despicable but handsome rogue and a plain but virtuous heroine, Patricia Mangan. She was a companion to an aunt by marriage and served her well though the lady treated her awfully. Mr. Bancroft was invited to the estate in hopes that he'll marry the cousin. Mr. B and Patricia meet in her special hideaway place; she is up in a tree. She had just witnessed him seducing a married woman and, after the lady leaves, they have a conversation where she gives as good as he dishes out. He is intrigued but continues to have sexual relationships with other women. Their path isn't always smooth but they finally earn a HEA. *4 stars* for some snarky wit and clever banter.
